MHD September Event: Emerging Psychedelic Therapies – An Evidence Based Introduction for Physical Therapists

Course Description:

As research and public interest in psychedelic-assisted therapies continue to grow, physical therapists are increasingly likely to encounter patients who are participating in clinical trials, receiving ketamine or regulated natural medicine services, engaging in self-directed psychedelic use, or seeking information about these emerging treatments. This introductory course provides an evidence-informed overview of psychedelic-assisted care, including commonly encountered substances, proposed mechanisms of action, current therapeutic applications, and the evolving research in mental health, chronic pain, and neurological conditions. Participants will also review basic safety considerations, contraindications, harm reduction principles, and the physical therapist’s role in maintaining appropriate professional boundaries while supporting interdisciplinary, patient-centered care. The course is designed to promote clinical literacy and informed decision-making rather than advocacy, equipping rehabilitation professionals with foundational knowledge relevant to contemporary practice.
